DEOS Moves to Second Generation Server System
On March 13th, 2008, DEOS realized a long-term need when it re-launched its system on a new server.
This server will dramatically improve the overall speed of the content provided via the DEOS website,
as well as allow for many upcoming improvements in the data offerings of DEOS.
A newer, faster server is certainly an improvement, but the new location for DEOS' systems is probably
just as important. Since DEOS first went live with its website in 2004, it's been the goal of DEOS to
provide the most comprehensive, real-time environmental monitoring system to the citizens of Delaware
24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Now the DEOS system can fulfill that mission. DEOS production servers
are now located in the University of Delaware's Computing Center, which has a 24/7 uninterruptable
power supply, a direct link to an internet backbone, and is climate-controlled in order to minimize wear
and tear on computers.
These changes, along with the addition of faster, cellular communications on its meteorological stations,
are a part of an ongoing effort at DEOS to make its system more reliable and more useful for its users.
